Review of the United States Refractories Industry

Factors affecting the U.S. refractories industry, such as decreasing demand, mergers, and decreased education are discussed, along with manufacturing statistics (i.e., annual value and product trends), indicating that the U.S. market has declined for five straight years. Research activities have changed, with more emphasis on practical, applied projects, which have continued to produce important advances. Many challenges and opportunities remain, based on the current and future business requirements.

Scenario of Refractories Industry- World and China

The paper reviews the present situation of refractories industry on a worldwide basis, in terms of production volume, consumption in steel industry, marketing, trading and structural change, based on the information from the presentations at the World Refractories Congress Singapore¡¯ 2002 together with some newly revealed data on China¡¯s refractories industry. Authors¡¯ comments and suggestions on future development have been also provided in the paper.

Effects of Admixtures on the Anti-oxidation Property of MgO/Si3N4 Composite Refractory

The effect of the admixtures of Al
¡¢Si metal and B4C¡¢MgAlON compound on the oxidation property of MgO/Si3N4 composite refractory has been studied,which is a promising carbon free refractory materials for steel production. All four admixtures can be used as the anti oxidation agent for Si3N4, but the mixture of Al and Si metal achieved the best result. The mixture can not only play the roles as anti oxidation for Si3N4, but also assist the sintering process and help form the dense sintering layers, improving the property of the composite. 

Properties and application of slide nozzle plate for High oxygen steel

Several kinds of slide nozzle plate such as Al2O3-ZrO2-C, MgO, Al2O3, Spinel-C and Al2O3-C SN plate for high oxygen steel used in Baosteel have been analysed, the appearance and size of the SN plate after using have been measured. Just the Al2O3-C SN plate has long service life in casting high oxygen steel, and the wear mechanism of different SN plates was discussed.

Al4C3 Hydration Thermochemical Analysis for Burned Carbon-containing Refractories with Al

In this paper, X-ray diffractogram analysis and SEM observation of Al4C3 formed at high temperature from carbon-containing refractories with Al have been carried out. Aluminum added to carbon-containing refractories reacts with C(s) to form Al4C3(s) gradually during heating from 600 ¡æ to 1200¡æ.It is considered that the interlocked structure of Al4C3 plate crystals promotes the outstanding increase of hot modulus of rupture of carbon-containing refractories with Al. The HMOR of carbon-containing refractories added with Al additive from 0 to 5wt% increases by 2.8 times being from 6.5MPa to 18.2MPa. After a thermochemical calculation for hydration reaction processes of Al4C3 and H2O (g), the equilibrium partial pressure chart of H2O (g) in H2O-Al4C3-Al(OH)3 system vs various temperatures has been attained . The H2O(g) partial pressure in the air needed for the Al4C3 hydration reaction is no more than 10-18 atm at the temperature below 120¡æ . It is considered that the burned carbon-containing refractories with Al is extremely easy to hydrate and the cracking of burned carbon-containing refractories is generated because that the hydration expansion is 2.11 times during transforming from Al4C3 to Al(OH)3 . The fundamental measure against hydration of the refractories is to insulate the refractories from H2O (g) by various means such as pitch impregnation or other sealing materials.

Application Study on¦Â-Sialon-Al2O3 Brick in Iron Ladle

The microstructure and slag erosion fractal dimension of reaction interface of ¦Â-Sialon-Al2O3 brick used in 300 Mt iron ladle of Baosteel have been studied by SEM and XRD. The results indicated that ¦Â-Sialon-Al2O3 brick exhibited excellent slag resistance. The main wear mechanism of¦Â-Sialon- Al2O3 brick is mainly from the spalling caused by thermal mechanical stress and attacked by slag secondly.

Research on Hot Gunning Repairing in Laboratory

The lining of blast furnace may be damaged partly, so that gunning repair is needed. The bonding strength of boundary surface between the repairing layer and remained lining of blast furnace has been studied by thermal simulation. The factors influencing the bonding strength are the ingredient gunning repair temperature, remained lining condition and water content of gunning refractory. The bonding strength decreases with the increases of remained lining temperature.
